Down Syndrome Awareness – Day 1
1 10 2012Our celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness month kicked off about 90 minutes after midnight.
It was not planned that way, however, Miss Carly’s tummy decided that it was the best time to wake up and enjoy a midnight snack.
The two of us sat down together and Miss Carly devoured a container of blueberry yogurt. As she finished up, she raised her right arm in the air, towards her ears, and titled her palm up towards the sky. She made one of her sweet Carly noises and grinned from ear to ear.
I am not sure what her motion meant but it brought her great joy and she wanted to make sure I knew it.
We curled up on the couch and less then five minutes later, Miss Carly was sound asleep on my chest.
It was a pretty great way to kick of Down Syndrome Awareness month!

Now this is the life
21 07 2012Miss Carly is having a wonderful time at the block party. A lovely 75 degrees, a nice and cool Carly sized pool, and a pretty pink bathing suit. What more could a girl want?
Ah, perfect weather for a dip in the pool.

Waiting for the waves
4 07 2012Went to the beach today. Tide kept going out so I had to keep moving Carly further and further out. When we were not close enough to the water, she would point forward and shout “Go” Here she is waiting for the waves.
Where are the waves…move me closer Dad!

You don’t know…
15 01 2012You don’t know why you are pregnant with a child who has Down syndrome.
You will know that you have been given this incredible blessing for a reason.
You don’t know how “much” Down syndrome your child will have.
You will know that each time your child smiles your heart will melt.
You don’t know how you will tell your family, friends, and coworkers about the diagnosis.
You will know that you have some amazing family and friends; I have Dave, who will always love and support you.
You don’t know how many sleepless nights you will have.
You will know that most of them will be just watching your beautiful child sleep.
You don’t know how big the Down syndrome community is.
You will know that the Down syndrome community is full of support, shoulders to cry on, sharing triumphs, and most importantly, it is full of love.

Wake up smiling
22 10 2011Carly rule number 2 is that life is always better when you wake up smiling. I am lucky enough to experience this every day when I get to see her smile when she wakes up from her nap and I wake up from my “night” of sleep.
I work the night shift and usually go to bed while the kids are heading to school and the rest of the world is getting up for the day. Miss Carly finishes school at noon, comes home and has lunch, after that she takes a nap.
This is when our schedules syncs up for a bit and as her nap time ends so does my night of sleep. Most of the time, she will wake up a bit before me and start making some noise. I will slowly wake up, open my eyes and be greeted by my little girl sitting up in her playpen and smiling at me. Sometimes, I will wake up first and get to watch her wake up, shake the cobwebs from her eyes, look around and then smile at me.
Her smile fills the room and my heart with joy.
I think to myself that I am truly blessed and this is the right way to start every day.
